Orthotics, Insoles & Inserts for Pain Relief
We see many patients suffering from foot or leg pain who are looking for relief. Our Physical Therapists are experts in foot and lower extremity biomechanics, injury identification and treatment, and knowledge of the demands of various activities on the foot and leg muscles. They have the knowledge and experience necessary to determine whether or not custom orthotics are what you need.
We perform a thorough biomechanical analysis, assess leg length and muscle imbalances, and recommend the appropriate orthotic with respect to activities, cushioning, and comfort. Depending on your biomechanical needs, this may be an over-the-counter, semi-custom, or custom-molded orthotic insert.
Orthotics may be beneficial for the following problems:
• extremely flat or high-arched feet
• plantar fasciitis
• heel spurs
• Achilles tendonitis
• shin splints – anterior and posterior
• posterior tibialis tendonitis or rupture
• hallux valgus or rigidus
• sesamoiditis
• bursitis
• arthritis

Payment & Insurance Information
InStep accepts virtually all major insurance carriers and participates in the vast majority of insurance networks. We also offer affordable, pay-for-service options for those without insurance or with high-deductible healthcare plans
Most insurance plans cover physical therapy and do not require a prescription or referral for you to see a physical therapist. Medicare and Workers Compensation are two areas that do require a referral. If you are not sure about your plan’s requirements, give us a call and our pre-certification specialists will be happy to contact your insurance company and verify your coverage.

Biomechanical Running Evaluations
Brief Biomechanical Evaluation with Shoe Analysis – Appropriate for the person who wants to determine which shoe will provide maximum benefit for his/her individual biomechanics. Will also identify whether there are biomechanical problems that could lead to injury, as well as whether the person might benefit from a shoe insert or orthotic. This evaluation is performed by a physical therapist and includes:
- biomechanical assessment of your lower extremity mechanics
- lower-extremity range-of-motion assessment
- videotaped analysis of you walking and running
- specific shoe fit and function determined and confirmed by slow-motion, frame-by-frame replay
- recommendation for shoes and/or orthotics
Comprehensive Biomechanical Evaluation with Injury Assessment – Appropriate for the person who has developed an injury limiting or affecting performance, has a history of recurring injuries, or wants a comprehensive preventative running exercise program. This evaluation is performed by a physical therapist and includes:
- full clinical biomechanical assessment of your entire body mechanics and function
- lower-extremity range-of-motion assessment
- videotaped analysis of you walking and running
- specific shoe fit and function determined and confirmed by slow-motion, frame-by-frame replay
- diagnosis and treatment of an injury
- recommendation for shoes and/or orthotics
- corrective prescription exercise program to rehabilitate or prevent injury
Performance Evaluation – Designed for the runner who wants to improve performance, running form or technique. This evaluation is performed by a physical therapist and includes:
- video assessment to evaluate running form, running posture, stride rate, and foot mechanics
- recommendations for modifying or improving running form to enhance performance
- appropriate information about drills, minimalist shoe training, or other specific areas of interest
Biomechanical Cycling Evaluations
Cycling evaluations are performed with an “optimal” cycling position in mind that optimizes aerodynamics and output efficiency. However, many cyclists do not have the internal ability to achieve these positions due to flexibility issues or inherent joint limitations. In these situations, forcing the body into a more aerodynamic position can cause compensations in other parts of the body and be less efficient for the cyclist, which can lead to pain and potential injury.
Standard Bike Fit Evaluation – Appropriate for the person who wants to be comfortable on his/her bike and a more efficient rider. This 30-minute evaluation is performed by a physical therapist and includes:
- assessment of your current riding position with adjustments made to cleats, seat position, and front-end positioning, as needed
- recommendations for equipment modification if current equipment cannot attain appropriate positioning
- cycling-specific clinical and biomechanical evaluation of your joint motions, muscle flexibility, strength and structural alignments to determine the source of your cycling injury
- assessment of your current riding position with adjustments made to cleats, seat position, and front end position, as needed
- video assessment, as needed
- recommendation for the addition of posting on cleats or orthotics, if needed
- corrective exercise strategy to eliminate your pain and attain a more efficient cycling position with correct biomechanics
